A slew of facile ideas is precisely the point ★★★★

Garrett Millerick was noticed at the Fringe last year with a terrific hour that was given surprising amounts of emotional substance by the way he worked his wife’s near-death experience into the narrative. This year, as the big-bearded, booming 36-year-old is quick to admit, it’s just funny stuff. Positive stuff: couldn’t we all use a bit of that these days? Hence his title: Smile.

That’s what he claims, anyway. And as he powers into a delicious deconstruction of his favourite television show, Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (hardly a cutting-edge topic), as he mocks the television executive who told him he needed another tragicomic gimmick this year, as he roars into routines about his parents, air travel and his local council’s infuriating recycling regime, he appears to…
